O artigo apresenta como princípio de sua fundamentação a possibilidade de compreender a filosofia de Platão como saber que intenciona, sobretudo, a formação e transformação do ser mesmo do homem, isto é, a alma mediante um processo terapêutico aplicado sobre si. Neste sentido será a partir da proposta interpretativa encontrada nas obras do helenista francês, Pierre Hadot, sobre a filosofia antiga, que inferir-se-á que em Platão há uma terapêutica da psyché, a qual, se fundamenta e se revela de maneira necessariamente (...) triádica: o cuidado de si, o conhecimento de si e o domínio sobre si, aqui denominados de “exercícios espirituais”, esta referida tríade, caracterizaria a filosofia platônica como um modo de vida, ou seja, uma proposta de ser abrangente que integre theoría e práxis. AimTo evaluate the cognitive functioning of subjects practicing trance mediumship in Brazil.MethodThe study was based on the measurement of cognitive functions of 19 spirits mediums through neuropsychological tests such as the Brief Cognitive Screening Battery, the Verbal Fluency Test, the digit span test, the cube test, the five digit test and an evaluation of mental health through scales such as the Beck Depression Inventory, the Self-Report Questionnaire, and the Trauma History Questionnaire. The sample included the participation of spirit mediums divided (...) into two groups. The more experienced group with 11 subjects had more than 10 years of mediumistic practice, while the other less experienced group with 8 subjects had 1–5 years of experience. The inclusion criteria were psychophonic mediums with regular trance practices for at least one year. The data collected were analyzed using the SPSS statistical package.ResultsRegarding performance on the BCSB and digit span test, all subjects reached scores at the median or higher in comparison to standardized scores of Brazilians. Scores of 90% on the cube test and 42% on the FAS were reached in comparison to median or higher values, versus the median of standardized scores among Brazilians. On the FDT, we found statistical significance in the choice stage, with higher performance of subjects whose initial age of trance recognition occurred before 21 years old. On the BDI scale, no participant met the criteria for major depression. The SRQ showed an incidence of common mental disorders in 21% of the sample, which was more prevalent in the LEG.ConclusionThe cognitive functioning of subjects who practice trance mediumship in Brazil is associated with cognitive health. Executive dysfunction may be a tendency in LEG. However, an incidence of common mental disorders in the LEG was observed. Executive processing was higher in the subgroup with early practices of recognizing the phenomenon. (shrink)

O objetivo deste artigo é apresentar uma interpretação dos livros G, ZHQ e L da Metafísica de Aristóteles, mostrando que eles podem ser lidos formando um todo argumentativo conectado. Os demais livros da Metafísica serão aqui desconsiderados, pois não se adéquam à interpretação proposta. O texto começa mostrando que é plausível concentrar-se em alguns livros dessa obra de Aristóteles e deixar outros de lado. Para fazê-lo, recorre-se a alguns scholars de Aristóteles, começando por C. A. Brandis. Em seguida, o artigo (...) desenvolve uma interpretação do livro G, afirmando que o modelo de ciência aí apresentado requer uma análise do conceito de substância. Dado que há diferentes tipos de substâncias, distinguidos nos capítulos 1 e 6 do livro L, o artigo dedica-se a esse livro e mantém que essa distinção é necessária a fim de se dar uma resposta apropriada à questão da substância. Os livros ZHQ, por sua vez, fornecem uma análise detalhada de um dos conceitos de substância distinguidos em L. Essa leitura dos cinco livros mencionados mostra, assim, que eles podem ser lidos como formando uma unidade. (shrink)

Since its onset, scholars have characterized social media as a valuable source for data collection since it presents several benefits (e.g. exploring research questions with hard-to-reach populations). Nonetheless, methods of online data collection are riddled with ethical and methodological challenges that researchers must consider if they want to adopt good practices when collecting and analyzing online data. Drawing from our primary research project, where we collected passive online data on Reddit, we explore and detail the steps that researchers must consider (...) before collecting online data: (1) planning online data collection; (2) ethical considerations; and (3) data collection. We also discuss two atypical questions that researchers should also consider: (1) how to handle deleted user-generated content; and (2) how to quote user-generated content. Moving on from the dichotomous discussion between what is public and private data, we present recommendations for good practices when collecting and analyzing qualitative online data. (shrink)

O artigo se propôs a compreender o tema das notícias falsas como tópico que aglutina em torno de si, questões que são de caráter eminentemente ético e epistêmico, educacional e político. Desse modo utilizou-se do diálogo Górgias, de Platão, para que mediante as suas problematizações como a oposição entre opinião e conhecimento e entre a racionalidade discursiva da filosofia e a retórica sofística, fosse então possível a problematização de um tópico contemporâneo a partir de uma contextualização filosófica clássica. Nesse sentido (...) evidenciou-se que tanto a retórica como as fake news possuem a mesma finalidade, isto é, meramente persuadir, portanto, levar a crer sem considerar a distinção entre simples opinião e conhecimento. Do mesmo modo o artigo apresentou como possibilidade de enfrentamento aos danos causados pelas notícias falsas uma perspectiva filosófico-educacional fundamentada nos conceitos complementares de Paideia e de Bildung, demonstrando-se assim que a causa primária de criação e propagação de fake news é, em verdade, originaria de falhas formativas à educação da pessoa humana. Assim, sugestiona-se que a formação humana em sentido racional e ético, condicionada na aquisição de virtude ou excelência (arete) na alma (psyche), bem como uma formação direcionada ao autodesenvolvimento da pessoa, são imprescindíveis para atenuar, de modo profícuo, as inverdades e injustiças provindas das notícias falsas que, invariavelmente, ocasionam prejuízos diversos aos indivíduos, às sociedades e às democracias. Os heterônimos do poeta português Fernando Pessoa constituem uma das mais fantásticas criações da poesia moderna. Através deles, fingindo-se um deles, o poeta apresenta-se múltiplo, como que habitado por várias pessoas, encerrando vários eus, num jogo literário em que entretanto não se identifica com nenhum deles. Sem desconsiderar a complexidade dessa criação literária, o artigo propõe-se a abordar alguns aspectos da obra do “Pessoa ele-mesmo”. Em certo sentido, Pessoa ele-mesmo é também um heterônimo. Poeta fingidor, nada nele é diretamente confessional (...) ou biográfico. Pessoa ele-mesmo apresenta-se como a expressão dramática de uma busca de identidade, aberta numa constelação de personalidades complexas e sofridas. A dor fingida que finge a dor sofrida e outras representações da dor existencial de Pessoa ele-mesmo podem ser lidas como angústia e mística. Para tecer esse percurso, o artigo se reportará basicamente às poesias inéditas de 1919-1935, basicamente os últimos escritos do grande e múltiplo poeta português. Palavras-chave : Fernando Pessoa. Through them, and pretending to be one of them, the poet presents himself as multiple, as if inhabited by several people, assuming several selves, in a literary game in which the poet does not identify himself with any of them. Without ignoring the complexity of such literary creation, the paper aims to address some aspects of the work of “Fernando Pessoa-himself”. In a sense, “Fernando Pessoa-himself” is also a heteronomous that carries a message that is neither confessional nor a bibliographic one. “Fernando Pessoa-himself” presents himself as a dramatic expression of an identity search within a constellation of some complex and suffered personalities. The “pretended pain” that pretends to be a true suffering as well other representations of the existential pain of “Fernando Pessoa-himself” can be comprehended as anxiety and mystique. To accomplish this purpose, the article will report primarily to the unpublished last poems of the great poet Fernando Pessoa, written between 1919 and 1935. Keywords: Fernando Pessoa. Heteronyms. O artigo pauta o desafio que a teologia tem diante de si na tarefa continua de nomear o Real numa cultura pluralista. Tal desafio coloca-se, sobretudo, à teologia fundamental que se encontra diante da afirmação da experiência como locus theologico . Para enfrentar essa temática o artigo propõe duas possíveis posturas de aproximação ao desafio de nomear o Real e, logo depois, partindo de uma das afirmações, enfrenta propriamente a temática da experiência como locus theologico, e suas conseqüências para a (...) teologia. Esta, por sua vez, será abordada diante do deslocamento que a leva da prática da tutela à vocação do discernimento. Assumindo a vocação do discernimento a teologia, em sua tarefa de nomear o Real, adentra o espaço epistemológico da relacionalidade. Tal espaço se afirma na superação de aproximações metafísicas e/ou racionalistas. Palavras-chave: Teologia fundamental – Pluralismo – Experiência.: The article guides the challenge that theology is faced with the task of naming the Real remains in a pluralistic culture. This challenge arises mainly to the fundamental theology which is before the affirmation of experience as a locus theologico. To address this issue the article proposes two possible positions of approaching the challenge of naming the Real, and soon after, leaving one of the statements, properly faces the issue of experience as theologico locus and its consequences for theology. This, in turn, will be addressed before the shift that leads to the practice of guardianship to the vocation discernment. Assuming the discernment of a vocation to theology, in its task of naming the Real, enters the epistemological space of relationality. Razões para odiar o ideário moderno. Esse talvez seja o mote central que mobiliza a escrita de Pedro Rocha de Oliveira já apresentado nas primeiras páginas de seu novo livro: Discurso filosófico da acumulação primitiva: estudo sobre as origens do pensamento moderno. Acompanhando os passos de alguns autores na alvorada da modernidade inglesa, pouco a pouco o autor vai desrecalcando o sentido histórico-social de um certo “nós” cuidadosamente fabricado por essa classe – também conhecida como intelligentsia – e que (...) estivera organicamente empenhada na acumulação primitiva do capital. Com um linguajar ácido e um humor desconcertante, procura estimular a imaginação dos leitores e leitoras a libertarem-se de quaisquer resquícios de simpatia à ideologia do progresso que insiste em atravessar a contemporaneidade. As preocupações que ocupam o pensamento do autor, embora estejam em continuidade com seus estudos anteriores, parecem ganhar uma nova forma, exigida pela própria matéria que se atém. Ao expor alguns dos principais argumentos que norteiam os ensaios deste livro, tentarei trazer à tona experiências históricas brasileiras que parecem materializar o sentido que àquela matéria sugere. Ethics has powerful teeth, but these are barely being used in the ethics of AI today – it is no wonder the ethics of AI is then blamed for having no teeth. This article argues that ‘ethics’ in the current AI ethics field is largely ineffective, trapped in an ‘ethical principles’ approach and as such particularly prone to manipulation, especially by industry actors. Using ethics as a substitute for law risks its abuse and misuse. This significantly limits what ethics can (...) achieve and is a great loss to the AI field and its impacts on individuals and society. This article discusses these risks and then highlights the teeth of ethics and the essential value they can – and should – bring to AI ethics now. (shrink)

Black holes are extremely relativistic objects. Physical processes around them occur in a regime where the gravitational field is extremely intense. Under such conditions, our representations of space, time, gravity, and thermodynamics are pushed to their limits. In such a situation philosophical issues naturally arise. In this chapter I review some philosophical questions related to black holes. In particular, the relevance of black holes for the metaphysical dispute between presentists and eternalists, the origin of the second law of thermadynamics and (...) its relation to black holes, the problem of information, black holes and hypercomputing, the nature of determinsim, and the breakdown of predictability in black hole space-times. I maintain that black hole physics can be used to illuminate some important problems in the border between science and philosophy, either epistemology and ontology. (shrink)

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought significant challenges to healthcare systems worldwide, and in Africa, given the lack of resources, they are likely to be even more acute. The usefulness of Traditional African Healers in helping to mitigate the effects of pandemic has been neglected. We argue from an ethical perspective that these healers can and should have an important role in informing and guiding local communities in Africa on how to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Particularly, we argue not only (...) that much of the philosophy underlying Traditional African Medicine is adequate and compatible with preventive measures for COVID-19, but also that Traditional African Healers have some unique cultural capital for influencing and enforcing such preventive measures. The paper therefore suggests that not only given the cultural context of Africa where Traditional African Healers have a special role, but also because of the normative strength of the Afro-communitarian philosophy that informs it, there are good ethical reasons to endorse policies that involve Traditional Healers in the fight against COVID-19. We also maintain that concerns about Traditional African Healers objectionably violating patient confidentiality or being paternalistic are much weaker in the face of COVID-19. (shrink)

Carrying out research on brains is important for medical advances in various diseases. However, such research ought not be carried out on human brains because the benefits do not outweigh the potential risks. A possible alternative is the use of brain surrogates. Nevertheless, some scholars who uphold a threshold account of moral status suggest the possibility that, with technological advances in the near future, more advanced brain surrogates will have very similar features to humans. This may suffice for these having (...) the same moral status as humans, and as a result, the situation may have implications for brain research, indeed, leading to the implication that this ought also not to be carried out upon brain surrogates. In this article, we present a relational approach to moral status which upholds that brain surrogates do not have the same moral status as human beings. Hence, brain research ought not be rejected on the grounds of equality of moral status between humans and brain surrogates. (shrink)

Corporations perform actions that can inflict harm with different levels of intensity, from death to material loss, to both companies’ internal and external stakeholders. Research has analysed corporate harm using the notions of corporate social irresponsibility and corporate crime. Critical management studies have been subjecting management and organizational practices and knowledge to critical analysis, and corporate harm has been one of the main concerns of CMS. However, CMS has rarely been deployed to analyse CSIR and corporate crime. Thus, the aim (...) of this paper is to critically analyse the perspectives of CSIR and corporate crimes on corporate harm via CMS in general and postcolonial studies in particular. The paper contributes by arguing that research on CSIR and corporate crime could be perceived as producing research that does not challenge the essence of contemporary corporation profit-seeking activities that ultimately produces corporate harm. We argue that CSIR and corporate crime are ideologies that assist in disguising the contradiction between producing shareholder value and the social good that is at the heart of the modern corporation system and the current economic system. Furthermore, the postcolonial view of CSIR and corporate crime highlights how they are based on a Western-centric view of corporate harm that ignores the realities and perspectives of the Global South, especially in situations where corporate harm leads to death in the Global South. El objetivo fue analizar la adquisición de vocabulario en idioma inglés de estudiantes de bachillerato a partir de la implementación de actividades de resolución de problemas. Se empleó un diseño cuasiexperimental de pre y post test, con grupo experimental y control. Los resultados sugieren que las actividades de resolución de problemas son estrategias didácticas efectivas para la enseñanza del inglés.

While virtually everyone recognizes the moral permissibility of whistleblowing under certain circumstances, most theorists offer relatively conservative accounts of when it is allowed, and are reluctant to offer a full recommendation of the practice as an important tool towards addressing ethical failures in the workplace. We think that accounts such as these tend to overestimate the importance of professional or personal obligations, and underestimate the moral obligation to shine light on severe professional malfeasance. Of course, a whistleblower, even an anonymous (...) one, often faces serious threats of retaliation and harm to their professional livelihoods and well-being. To address these challenges we argue in favor of a practice that we will call Preemptive Anonymous Whistleblowing (PAW). Such whistleblowing is preemptive in that a whistleblower provides information about malfeasance to a party in a position to do something about it without first raising the worry to one’s immediate superiors. At first blush, such preemption may seem unsettling, and PAW admittedly raises a number of worrisome issues. We defend PAW, however, as part of a larger argument that whistleblowing is morally required more often than is commonly thought. The availability of PAW as an option provides a method for allaying the concern that whistleblowing can be overly burdensome due to the risks of job and career. Insofar as that concern can be allayed, it is feasible for there to be substantial moral requirements to engage in whistleblowing in cases where severe harms can be prevented. With high enough stakes, there is a moral requirement for whistleblowing. (shrink)

In questo libro, che apparve nel 1975 a coronamento di tutta l'ultima fase della riflessione bontadiniana, viene pienamente raggiunto l'obbiettivo che il filosofo si era in essa proposto, vale a dire la rigorosa fondazione della metafisica classica perseguitata attraverso l'affinamento critico del suo nucleo essenziale. Tale nucleo è individuato nel principio di Parmenide che, cimentandosi dialetticamente con l'esperienza del divenire, si determina in ultima istanza come principio di creazione.

Dung’s argumentation frameworks are formalisms widely used to model interaction among arguments. Although their study has been profusely developed in the field of Artificial Intelligence, it is not common to see its treatment among those less connected to computer science within the logical-philosophical community. In this paper we propose to bring to that audience a proof-theory for argument justification based on tableaux, very similar to those the Logic students are familiar with. The tableaux enable to calculate whether an argument or (...) subset of arguments are accepted or rejected in accordance to Dung’s preferred and grounded extension-based semantics. Soundness and completeness results regarding those semantics are provided. (shrink)

Some philosophers and activists have been sceptical about the relevance of pursuing animal justice to progress racial justice. Routinely, these sceptics have argued that allying animal and racial justice struggles is politically unfeasible, counterproductive, distractive and disruptive for the achievement of racial justice. The conclusion of these sceptics is that animal justice is either a barrier or irrelevant to racial justice and, as such, activists should not ally both struggles. In this article, I wish to contest the arguments that forward (...) the idea that these struggles should not be addressed together, especially in the case of addressing anti-Black racial injustices. I offer a negative argumentative strategy to forward my thesis; namely, I offer reasons to reject the arguments that are sceptical about the relevance of addressing animal justice to achieve progress in racial justice. I contend that racial injustice is partly fuelled by the capacity contract. The capacity contract, in turn, is intertwined with the way humans treat animals. Owing to the fact that speciesism fuels the contract that incites racism, then addressing speciesism is instrumentally relevant for overcoming racial injustices. Moreover, I demonstrate in this article that not only are there various ways that anti-racist and anti-speciesist struggles are interconnected, but also that the project of addressing them together is politically feasible and desirable.
